Antarctica is the coldest place on earth. Even during the summer months the temperatures are below freezing. One of the few animals that can survive year round on the snow covered continent of Antarctica is the penguin. It has many special characteristics that allow it to survive in this cold habitat.  For our science unit you will be researching the amazing continent of Antarctica and the penguins that live there! Through the power of the internet you and a partner will become Antarctic Penguin Explorers researching the habitat of the penguins that live on Antarctica!

1. Using the resources listed below and the books provided in class research the penguins of Antarctica.  As you do your research try to answer the following questions:
72004_11909_22.pngWhat is the climate in Antarctica?
72004_11909_22.pngDoes the climate vary throughout the year?
72004_11909_22.pngWhat special characteristics do penguins have that allow them to survive?
72004_11909_22.pngWhat characteristics create a problem for them?
72004_11909_22.pngWhich characteristics do you think are the most important?
72004_11909_22.pngIf the climate changed (got warmer, the ice melted) what would happen to the penguins?
Would they be able to survive? How?

2. Use the MediaBlender template worksheet to take notes on the climate of Antarctica as well as the penguin's habitat.

3. Bookmark pictures and websites as you collect your information to use later in your MediaBlender project.

4. Organize your information about penguins and their habitat in the MediaBlender stack template.

5. Share your  MediaBlender project with the class during our Antarctic Expedition Day!
